The Sage of Six Paths
To tell the story of our world is to start at the very beginning. Back in ancient times, there were no Ninja and powerful demons roamed the world, terrorizing humanity. It was at this time that one soul rose to prominence. Though his name is lost to history, he has become known as the Sage of Six Paths. It is he who discovered Chakra and he who taught what he had learned to others, effectively creating Ninjutsu.
Little is known about this period due to the lack of record keeping, but what is known is that the Sage of Six Paths came to be revered after he did battle with the Ten-Tailed Beast, which had been terrorizing the land and causing untold amounts of misery. It was the Sage of Six Paths who sealed the ten-tails Chakra into himself, while using his extraordinary powers to seal the body of the Ten-Tails into the sky, forming the Moon. It was after this that the Sage of Six Paths gained his moniker while simultaneously becoming the first Jinchuriki.
His renown quickly spread after the defeat of the Ten-Tails and people came from far and wide to learn from the Sage of Six Paths, while Ninjutsu as it would later become known would spread across the land as a near religious practice. For a time, there was peace. Years and years passed as the Sage of Six Paths would eventually marry and settle down. Sensing that the end of his life was nearing and knowing that the Ten-Tails Chakra would be expelled upon his death, the Sage of Six Paths divided the Chakra into Nine Parts, effectively creating the Bijuu as the world knows them today.
The Sage of Six Paths would come to father two sons, who the Sage would entrust his desire for peace to. The eldest son believed that his Father's power was the key to peace and thus inherited his Father's eyes, while the youngest son believed that Love was the true path to peace and he would come to inherit his Father's body and spirit. Dissatisfied with the eldest Son's answer, the Sage ultimately chose the Youngest to inherit his will for peace.
Following his death, the two sons would become divided. Furious that his father had shunned him, the Eldest resolved to prove his father wrong and show that strength was indeed the path to power while the youngest continued to preach his fathers pacifistic ideals. It was from them that the Uchiha and Senju clans would be born, the two clans being locked in an eternal conflict against one another.
Over two hundred years later and the descendants of the Senju and Uchiha clans would eventually come to form an accord, resulting in the formation of the first Ninja village : Konohagakure. Some Uchiha dissented, feeling the Senju would always treat them as inferior and their fears were brought to reality when the Senju Clan Lord was proclaimed the First Hokage. This resulted in the first Exodus of the Uchiha, dozens leaving the village in disgust.
Taking guidance from Konohagakure the other warring Clans would eventually settle down, either by conquering one another or reaching peace agreements. It was the start of a new era, and for a time peace existed throughout the land between the Ninja Villages. Falling back on their old mercenary routes, the Ninja Clans would begin to offer their abilities out as contracted services and soon having a Ninja Village within your country became a desirable thing.
The FIrst Shinobi World War
War, however, was inevitable. The First Shinobi World War remains clouded in mystery as to why it started, though Jinchuriki were used rather liberally. The Uchiha who had left Konohagakure sided with Kumogakure and Sunagakure against Konohagakure. The clan would attempt to usurp the rule of the Senju by using their Mangekyou Sharingan to manipulate and control the Nine-Tails Fox.
Answering the call of their allies, Uzushiogakure dispatched their greatest Ninjas from the Uzumaki clan. Destruction spread far and wide across the land, millions of lives were lost before the Uzumaki Clan was able to seal the Nine-Tailed fox within one of their own. Shortly afterward, the Raikage and Kazekage would claim that they were manipulated by the Uchiha into going to war. Unfortunately, the other countries were far from forgiving. Economic disparity would grow between the villages and the resentment of the Uchiha would grow larger. It was a tale for disaster, but peace would finally reach the land.
Unbeknownst to the rest of the Ninja World, Kirigakure, who had remained surprisingly absent from world affairs, was in the midst of the first of many bloody civil-wars. The Title of Mizukage was up for dispute and the Land of Water was plunged into a dark civil war where Kekkei Genkai were used liberally to cause the wanton slaughter of thousands. Spearheading this destruction was the Kaguya clan, with their seemingly insatiable desire for blood. The Civil War would grip Kirigakure for nearly fifteen years before the Second Mizukage would usurp the First, seizing control of the village and banishing the Kaguya Clan.
Peace had returned to the land, but it would be short lived. With the economic disparity between villages being far too great, within twenty-years of the First Shinobi World War tension was on the rise once again. As the First Hokage had predicted, the armistice was too one-sided and despite the prosperity it had brought to Konohagakure, it left Kumogakure and Sunagakure near bankrupt. Alliances were formed and economic pacts were solidified which would inevitably escalate to full-blown conflict. The First Hokage would not live to see the war, the Second Hokage taking over in his stead as the tides of war began to brew. Elsewhere, the Bijuu were slowly being sealed one-by-one.
The Second Shinobi World War
The Second Shinobi World War was a long period of death and bloodshed. Spearheaded by economic inequality, the other villages turned upon the Land of Fire and her allies as war tore through the country side once again. This war saw the liberal use of mercenaries, the Kaguya Clan being prime among them. Exiled from Kirigakure, their clan acted as a band of wandering warriors for hire, working for whichever side of the war could offer them the most money. Once again, Uzushiogakure would be called upon by Konohagakure to aid in the war. At this point, relations between the two were still good as Uzumaki frequently acted as exchange students with Konohagakure. The War would be mostly fought within the lands of the smaller countries, leaving them war-torn and in shambles.
It was after seeing the devastation of the battlefield that the Second Hokage implemented the decree that every Ninja Team was to have at least one Medical-Nin present to minimize losses. During a lull in the war, the other villages affiliated with the Land of Fire took to the Second Hokage's example and began to implement similar policies. Seeing its effectiveness from the otherside, the opposing forces would come to adopt these policies as well.
Years would pass as the war would drag on, the economic condition of the Shinobi villages would steadily decline. In the waning days of the Second Shinobi World War, Kirigakure would eventually join the fray on the side of Konohagakure as the Kaguya had sided with Sunagakure. Seeing this as a chance to right previous wrongs, Kirigakure's elite Hunter-Nin were dispatched to the main-land to support Konohagakure's efforts. While this was happening, the Raikage and Yukigakure saw the chance to strike as they turned their attention to Kirigakure.
When the Kirigakure forces would approach Sunagakure they would not find the Kaguya, as they had expected, but rather the First Kazekage, the Jinchuriki of the One-Tailed Beast. He wrought havoc throughout their forces, while the Kaguya lead the Yukigakure and Raikage's forces into Kirigakure. The battle was long and bloody, while the Hunter-Nin were driven from Sunagakure, Kirigakure proved to simply be one bridge too far as the Raikage would die locked in battle with the Second Mizukage. The battle was disastrous for the Kaguya Clan as they suffered immeasurable losses. With the Second Mizukage deceased, the Third would see the error of her predecessor and rescind the banishment of the Kaguya as Kirigakure would withdraw from the war.
The final battle of the war would take place in the Land of Fire, with the Second Hokage facing down the Kazekage at the Valley of the End. The battle was a fierce one, the two foes engaged in mortal combat against one another. Finally, however, the Second Hokage would relent. Showing the Kazekage mercy, the Hokage spared his life in exchange for peace. When the deal was sealed, however, the Second Hokage would succumb to his wounds. Perishing.
In quite an unexpected revelation, the heir to the title of Hokage was a Uchiha. Though the take over was peaceful, the reign of the Third Hokage set a completely unheard of precedent. In what some considered a surprise, the Third Hokage actually maintained the peace as best as he could.
The Third Shinobi World War
But the peace would only last for a short amount of time. For ten years, the Shinobi world would enjoy the peace before it would fall apart once again. Although they had been apart of the Allied Forces, Kirigakure was faced with unfavorable terms in the end that were levied upon them by the Allies for their withdrawal. Because of this, Kirigakure withdrew into itsself and began to build up its military might during the interwar years. The Mizukage would place emphasis on quality over quantity, resulting in the Kirigakure Academy gaining a reputation for its brutality. Often, students would perish for failing to pass their tests and the final exam of the village was a free-for-all battle between the students, with whoever was the last ones standing passing over to graduate.
Thus, when war erupted Kirigakure proved to be more then an even foe for the Ninja of Konohagakure, Iwagakure, and Kumogakure. Beside Kirigakure was Yukigakure, Amegakure, and Sunagakure. Through the war, Kirigakure and Sunagakure managed to batter back their foes and lay claim to vast swaths of territory which had previously belonged to others. Faced with the hardships of the war, the Hokage would once more call on Uzushiogakure. Though the ties between the villages had long since been weakened, the Uzumaki clan still felt honor bound to honor their alliance with the Land of Fire and once again the Land of Whirlpools found itsself at the forefront of the war.
The war would drag for several years in stalemate, though Kirigakure and Sunagakure looked to hold the upperhand. In the waning years of the war, secret peacetalks began between Konohagakure and Sunagakure as the Third Mizukage would fall in battle against the Uzushiogakure and Kumogakure Nin.
The Fall of Uzushiogakure
The final year of the war was considered the most devestating. It was during this year that the Allied Forces were pushed back into their own territories and the Land of Whirlpools became the site of a grand battle. Lodged against them were the skilled Ninjas of Amegakure and Sunagakure, who sought the utter destruction of Uzushiogakure. The Uzumaki would send a request of aid to Konohagakure, who was locked in secret peace-talks to end the war by way of the Kazekage.
The Uchiha Hokage remembered how his clan had been foiled by the Uzumaki interlopers during the First World War and saw an opening. A message was delivered to the Kazekage, in exchange for peace Konohagakure would not only ignore the request for aid but also reveal to the invading forces the location of Uzushiogakure, with the official peace accord to be signed immediately after the battle.
The Kazekage agreed and Konohagakure would betray their allies in exchange for their own security. Unexpectedly Uzushiogakure found itself under direct siege by the Kazekage and the Amegakure Nin. The battle was a fierce once as the blood of innocent and Shinobi alike ran through the streets, the Amegakure Nin going house to house and slaughtering any affiliated with the Uzumaki Clan and the village. The final battle between the Uzushiogakure Nin and the Kazekage was so great that it literally ripped the lands apart, and the Land of Whirlpools was to be no more, the Kazekage perishing along with it.
The Post-War Period
The Post-War Period would last ten years, with Konohagakure, Sunagakure, and Kirigakure being known now as the Three Great Ninja Villages. Their powers were unrivaled while the other villages continued to suffer in inequity beneath their economic and military mights. In the second year following the war, the Third Hokage would be turned upon by his ANBU Bodyguards, the Hokage's younger brother and trusted ANBU Bodyguard would use his knowledge of the Third's treason to usurp his position. Following the fierce battle, the Third Would lay dead, his younger brother claiming both his title and his Mangekyou Sharingan for himself.
An uneasy peace exists between the villages and to strengthen relations to ensure that the peace remains, the three great villages have agreed to hold the Chuunin Examinations in Sunagakure.
